Thai classifiers are small counting words used with nouns. English has a similar idea in “two pieces of paper”, but Thai uses counting words for many more everyday things.

The usual order is noun + number + classifier. For example, หนังสือสองเล่ม means “two books”: หนังสือ = book, สอง = two, เล่ม = the counting word for books.
Five useful classifiers
- คน (khon) — people
ห้องนี้มีนักเรียนสามคน
There are three students in this room. - ตัว (tua) — animals
ฉันมีแมวสองตัว
I have two cats. - เล่ม (lêm) — books
ฉันมีหนังสือสองเล่ม
I have two books. - คัน (khan) — cars
เรามีรถสองคัน
We have two cars. - ใบ (bai) — bags
ฉันมีกระเป๋าสองใบ
I have two bags.
These are examples, not each word’s only use. Learn new nouns together with their classifiers — it makes counting much easier.
